Wearable device battery new material: germanium nanowire supercapacitor

One of the major limitations of current wearable devices is the size of the internal battery. Since the wearable device needs to be small and light enough to be comfortable to wear, there is not much space reserved for the battery. MIT researchers in the United States have developed a new method of powering wearable devices.

 

This breakthrough is a new method of manufacturing supercapacitors. The new method of MIT uses germanium nanowires as the electrodes of miniature supercapacitors.

 

Researchers have made supercapacitors of high power density that can meet the need for data transfer over WiFi or other functions. The new germanium nanowire supercapacitors outperform existing batteries and take up less space.

 

The new supercapacitor can reduce the volume of the battery by 30%, or that the wearable device can be made smaller. Researchers say the new supercapacitors have high power density, medium energy density, and low cost. These features are very suitable for wearable devices. The germanium nanowires are also very flexible and can be incorporated into fabrics. The development team is studying how to design a practical version that is easy to produce.
