Six Advantages of Film Capacitors

Film capacitors are common electronic components used in our electronic products. A film capacitor uses metal foil as electrodes, which are overlapped with plastic films such as polyester, polypropylene, polystyrene or polycarbonate from both ends, and then wound into a cylindrical construction. In many circuits, we can see film capacitors. What are their advantages and what roles do they play?

No.1: Small Size

Because film is used as the dielectric, film capacitors can be manufactured in very small sizes, so they do not take up much space during installation. For instance, KYET's CBB21X ultra-miniature polypropylene film capacitor, CL21X ultra-miniature polyester film capacitor, CL11 polyester capacitor, CL23B correction capacitor, and others can all be made extremely compact.

No.2: Large Capacitance

Compared with electrolytic capacitors, the capacitance of film capacitors is relatively smaller, but compared with ceramic capacitors, film capacitors can be made with larger capacitance values, meaning they can store more electrical energy.

No.3: Good Stability

The stability of film capacitors is noticeably better than that of electrolytic capacitors and ceramic capacitors. They are not prone to performance changes due to long operating time or environmental variations. Their service life is very long; a qualified film capacitor can easily be used for 5 to 10 years without any problems.

No.4: Self-healing Property

Film capacitors have a self-healing property, which is a distinctive feature of this type of capacitor. It can be divided into discharge self-healing and electrochemical self-healing. Because of this property, a damaged film capacitor often does not need to be replaced — it can heal itself in many cases. This helps reduce capacitor replacement costs, lower maintenance expenses, and minimize the time spent on troubleshooting and the downtime caused by equipment failure.

Film capacitors can usually operate normally at higher frequencies. For example, KYET's CBB81 resonant capacitor and MMKP82 double-sided metallized capacitor can both work stably in high-pulse circuits.

The insulating film of film capacitors generally possesses high dielectric strength and low leakage current, which effectively reduces circuit power consumption and noise. The internal temperature rise of the capacitor is also very small, and the capacitor itself generates very little heat.
