Film capacitors have a common advantage, which is that they can heal themselves. If other electronic components are damaged, they may not work properly, but film capacitors can automatically repair internal defects. How does it work? Why can film capacitors heal themselves?

1. How are film capacitors produced?

Taking Safe's film capacitor as an example, it evaporates metal aluminum or zinc onto polyester or polypropylene film under vacuum and high temperature conditions to produce metallized polyester or metallized polypropylene film.Metallized polyester or metallized polypropylene film is used and wound into capacitor cores by a fully automatic winding machine. After hot pressing, core braiding, gold spraying, welding, energizing, vacuum dipping, printing, sorting, finished product inspection and packaging processes, qualified film capacitors can finally be produced.

2. How do internal defects of film capacitors achieve self-healing?

If there are defects in the metallized film used, the capacitor will undergo electrical breakdown after power is applied, and a hole with a penetration diameter of about 0.5~1mm will be formed at the dielectric breakdown point.After the discharge is completed, the temperature of the discharge area drops rapidly, and a part of the evaporation products of the medium re-condenses to form an obvious insulating halo around the electrodes in the discharge area, isolating the breakdown area from the strike, and finally restoring the normal operation of the capacitor.

3. Advantages and disadvantages of self-healing film capacitors.

The advantage is that even if there are defects in the film material, it can heal itself and will not affect the normal use of the film capacitor.The disadvantage is that if the number of self-healing times is too many, the capacity of the film capacitor will decay significantly.

Special attention should be paid to the following: Generally, film capacitors use polyester or polypropylene film. During the production process, due to consistency issues, the film itself may have defects, and the produced capacitors are prone to self-healing. Too many self-healing points will cause the capacitor to fail.If the film is of low quality produced by a small factory, the consistency will be particularly poor, so we recommend that you buy film capacitors from brands like Safe, and try not to buy film capacitors with neutral printing that does not dare to print the brand, because the latter are mostly cut corners, and the proportion of low quality capacitors is extremely high.
