Comparison Between Safety Capacitors and Film Capacitors

We all know that capacitors are used in electrical appliances, and many people may not be very familiar with them. There are many types of capacitors commonly available on the market, and different types have their own characteristics and advantages. For example, the safety capacitor, which is very common and popular nowadays, has been adopted in many electrical switches on the market and has received quite positive feedback. Yet many people still don’t know exactly what its advantages are. Now, let’s take a look at what the editor from Furuixin shares with us: a head-to-head comparison between safety capacitors and film capacitors — which one comes out on top?

Whether a safety capacitor is better than a film capacitor cannot be judged from just a simple, one-sided perspective. They have different uses and different application scenarios, so which one is better really depends on where it is used. However, here we can first take a look at the differences between safety capacitors and film capacitors. The specific differences are as follows:

1. Certification

Safety capacitors are divided into X capacitors and Y capacitors. Y capacitors, for instance, are made of ceramic material, which is already different from film capacitors in terms of material. When it comes to safety certification, safety capacitors must pass certifications, and there are many types of certifications available. Different manufacturers may obtain different certifications, both in type and quantity. Generally speaking, the more certifications a safety capacitor has, the better. Without proper certification, a capacitor cannot be used in the safety capacitor category. In contrast, film capacitors do not need any certification before being promoted and used on the market. In fact, from the perspective of certification requirements, we can deduce that safety capacitors are better than film capacitors — after all, certified products offer greater safety assurance.

2. Brand Printing

We know that many products now have certain information printed on their appearance, such as brand information. For safety capacitors, printing the brand on the exterior is mandatory — this is also a requirement in certain certifications. However, there is virtually no such requirement for film capacitors. Generally speaking, unless a film capacitor manufacturer wants to do its own promotion and voluntarily prints the relevant information, brand-related information is almost never printed on the exterior of film capacitors.

3. Performance

Since these are two different types of capacitors, their performance characteristics are certainly different. For example, the main material of an X safety capacitor differs from that of a film capacitor. X safety capacitors are encapsulated with a plastic housing, while film capacitors use a polypropylene film. Comparatively, safety capacitors with plastic encapsulation have better high-temperature resistance. In addition, because of the plastic encapsulation, safety capacitors can also withstand high humidity.

From the above aspects, it is clear that safety capacitors do outperform film capacitors. Of course, in practical applications, you still need to consider the application scenario — choosing the most suitable one is what matters most.
