What is the thermal sensitivity of film capacitors

This summer is hotter than ever before. Whether at work or at home, we cannot live without air conditioning. Every night when it gets dark, it is still very hot outside when we go for a walk. It is as hot as a steamer, making people feel restless. Electronic products cannot withstand this high temperature, especially many electronic products need to work in a cool and ventilated place.

Electronic components built into electronic products also need to pay attention to high temperatures. Excessive temperature can easily damage electronic components and electronic products, such as film capacitors, which are prone to heat sensitivity at high temperatures.

一、Do you know what thermal sensitivity is?

Thermal sensitivity refers to the phenomenon that electronic components or materials are degraded, fail or damaged due to thermal stress, thermal expansion, material aging and other factors in a high temperature environment. It does not refer to thermistors. Thermal sensitivity is common in electronic components such as film capacitors.

Film capacitors use metal foil as electrodes, which are overlapped with plastic films such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene or polycarbonate at both ends and then rolled into a cylindrical shape.

As dielectric materials, the temperature resistance of these plastic films affects the performance of film capacitors in high temperature environments. Generally, films with high temperature resistance are more expensive, while films that are not resistant to high temperatures are relatively cheaper.

Film capacitors will generate a certain amount of heat during operation. If the heat dissipation is poor or they are in a high temperature environment for a long time, thermal sensitivity problems may occur.

Film capacitors become thermally sensitive when working in high temperature environments for a long time, which is mainly due to the influence of material properties and the external working environment.

二、Why does thermal sensitivity occur?

Material aging: The dielectric materials and packaging materials of film capacitors are prone to aging at high temperatures, causing changes in physical properties such as flexibility and thermal expansion coefficient, leading to performance degradation or failure. The capacity of the film capacitor will also gradually decrease and cannot meet the normal needs of the circuit.

Thermal stress: Thermal stress caused by temperature changes may cause changes in the internal structure of film capacitors, such as peeling and cracks between electrodes and dielectric layers, thus affecting their electrical performance.

Poor heat dissipation: If the working environment of the film capacitor is poorly ventilated or the heat dissipation design is unreasonable, the heat generated cannot be dissipated in time, which will cause the internal temperature to continue to rise and the performance of the film capacitor will have problems.

The above is the reaction after the film capacitor becomes thermally sensitive. In fact, whether it is a film capacitor or other electronic components, the normal operating temperature should be maintained to ensure the normal operation of electronic products.
